About this Performance
Written when he was just 28 years old, the F-major String Quartet was Ravel’s first major success as a composer. Upon hearing its youthful spirit and technical maturity, Debussy found the piece to be absolutely perfect. He told Ravel, “In the name of the gods of music, and in mine, do not touch a single note of what you have written.”
The program opens with Caplet’s harp and string quartet piece inspired by “The Masque of the Red Death,” a short story by the master of the macabre, Edgar Allan Poe. Conte fantastique evokes the tale’s eerie ambience through intermittent silences, chromatic notes, and rapid, taunting rhythms. Also darkly cast, Shostakovich’s Eighth String Quartet builds upon Jewish folk music, finding hope and laughter amid tragedy and tears.
Performed in between the two, Hindemith’s Kleine Kammermusik (Little Chamber Music) flips the mood completely, introducing a sassy bassoon, a whimsical oboe, and more syncopated woodwinds to the program.
