About this Performance

Balancing optimism and joy with melancholy and grief, Aram Khachaturian's Trio teems with rhapsodic dialogues based on Caucasian folk tunes, while Zoltán Kodály's Serenade weaves modernist harmonies with Hungarian folk dances to create what his compatriot Bartók called "a fairy world never dreamed of before." Inspired by English choral music, Bohuslav Martinů's Three Madrigals are poetic miniatures filled with inventive textures and explosions of bold, pulse-racing sound. And Antonin Dvořák's String Quintet, written during the composer's time in Iowa in 1893, marries Bohemian style with music of the Iroquois and African American peoples to produce a souvenir of his sun-drenched summer exploring the American Midwest. Come early and enjoy a glass of wine on us to complete the perfect night out.
