Legendary pianist Oscar Peterson returns to the Bowl with the members of his acclaimed quartet: Martin Drew on drums, Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen on bass, and Ulf Wakenius on guitar. This concert salutes the legacy of Jazz at the Philharmonic, the acclaimed series of concerts that began in the mid-1940s at Philharmonic Auditorium in Los Angeles and toured worldwide throughout the next two decades. Instrumental in launching Peterson’s career, the concerts, produced by Peterson’s manager Norman Granz, later founder of the Verve and Pablo record labels, helped popularize modern jazz in the U.S. and abroad. Artists such as Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Nat “King” Cole, Charlie Parker, Coleman Hawkins, as well as the big
bands of Duke Ellington and Count Basie all received exposure travelling the world with Jazz at The Philharmonic.

THE CLAYTON-HAMILTON JAZZ ORCHESTRA, co-led by bassist John Clayton, saxophonist Jeff Clayton, and drummer Jeff Hamilton, has received critical and commercial praise for its rousing live concert and festival performances, and award-winning recordings. Its first recording, Groove Shop, was named by CD Review as one of the best recordings of 1990. Esteemed jazz critic Leonard Feather awarded it his 26th- and 27th-annual “Golden Feather Award” as both 1990’s and 1991’s “Best Big Band”. In addition to performing and recording on its own, the orchestra is in demand by artists such as Quincy Jones, Joe Williams, Diana Krall, John Pizzarelli, Ernestine Anderson, Benny Carter and Dr. John. Their recording, Explosive! – featured vibraphonist Milt Jackson, and was the last he made under his own name as a leader. Their most recent recording, Shout Me Out! , has been hailed as their most exciting to date.

OSCAR PETERSON is widely regarded as one of the greatest piano players of all time, whose distinctive playing has been showcased for over 50 years in various groups, trios and solos. Impresario Norman Granz first heard him in 1947 and invited him to join the all-star concert troupe, “Jazz at the Philharmonic.” In 1950, he formed his first duo with bassist Ray Brown and toured the world while simultaneously recording, conducting seminars, and founding a jazz school in Toronto. He is a classically trained improviser, and his blues-infused style can be traced to piano great Art Tatum. His recent release is a collection of ballads from the past 10 years, Oscar’s Ballads (Telarc). Oscar Peterson last performed at the Hollywood Bowl in 1998.

Whether demonstrating his command of alto sax, vocals, flute or, most notably, tenor sax, JAMES MOODY is a jazz legend. Now age 76, Moody was one of the first tenor players playing bop in the mid-1940s. His prolific career includes stints in the bebop big band of Dizzy Gillespie, and working with Miles Davis, Max Roach, and Dinah Washington. An engaging stage personality, James Moody has made an indelible contribution to jazz. He last performed at the Hollywood Bowl in 1981.
