  • ONLINE TOUR JOURNAL AND SPECIAL EVENTS FEATURED ON PHILHARMONIC'S SUMMER 2002 EUROPEAN FESTIVALS TOUR
  • Aug. 22, 2002
  • August 22 - September 4, 2002

Notes from the road: Fans of the Los Angeles Philharmonic can travel virtually with the orchestra to the great European festivals when www.laphil.com launches its first-ever daily online journal. Principal Concertmaster Martin Chalifour will demonstrate his photographic flair, and "journalists" who will submit their musings from the road include orchestra members Raynor Carroll (Principal Percussion), Patricia Kindel (bassoon), Barry Socher (violin), and Roy Tanabe (violin); General Manager Deborah Borda; and Board member Ginny Mancini. Look forward to behind-the-scenes glimpses of this five-city tour from August 21 - September 5.

Gehry and Salonen in Helsinki: Architect Frank Gehry joins the last leg of the tour in Helsinki for the opening of an exhibition on Walt Disney Concert Hall (which opens in Los Angeles in Fall 2003) at the Museum of Finnish Architecture on September 5. Also taking place on the 5th is a special panel discussion on Music and Architecture with Esa-Pekka Salonen, Frank Gehry, and Ernest Fleischmann. The orchestra will also be entertained at the U.S. Embassy in Helsinki.

Patrons behind the scenes in Edinburgh and London: Philharmonic patrons will join the tour in Edinburgh and London, August 26 - September 1. Events slated include private tours of those cities' landmarks such as Edinburgh Castle, Buckingham Palace, and the National Gallery in London; performances; and backstage access.

The European tour includes performances at the festivals of Lucerne (Aug. 23, 24, 25), Edinburgh (Aug. 27, 28), Proms (London - Aug. 30, 31), Flanders (Brussels - Sept. 2), and Helsinki (Sept. 3, 4). The Los Angeles Philharmonic was the first American orchestra to perform at the famous BBC Prom Concerts at London's Royal Albert Hall; their last tour with Esa-Pekka Salonen to European festivals was in 1998.
