  • PIANIST JOE SAMPLE AND HIS TRIO OPEN THE CONCERT

Wednesday, July 24 at 8 PM

    A Lexus Passionate Performance

Grammy Award-winning vocalist Natalie Cole returns to the Hollywood Bowl on Wednesday, July 24 at 8 p.m. Smooth jazz piano legend Joe Sample plays a set with his trio to start the concert. This is the third concert of KLON's Jazz at the Bowl series.

Backbeat Live pre-concert events take place at the Patio, one hour prior to the Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday concerts; free to all ticket holders. The July 24 session features a performance by the Miles Mosley Quartet.

Natalie Cole revisits her jazz roots this year with live concerts and a new collection of standards in her upcoming album, Ask A Woman Who Knows (Elektra), due in stores in September. Last year, she released her autobiography, Angel on My Shoulder (Warner Books) and her life was the subject of the NBC television movie, The Natalie Cole Story. Beloved veteran jazz pianist Joe Sample, whose latest release is The Pecan Tree (Verve), comes back to the Bowl after wowing the crowd at last year's JVC Jazz concert.

KLON's Jazz at the Bowl continues in July with the Latin Jazz Spectacular with Celia Cruz and the Big 3 Palladium Orchestra on July 31. August concerts include Tony Bennett performing on August 7; Soul Night on August 14 featuring Isaac Hayes, Maceo Parker, and Arrested Development; August 21 is our Big Band Blast with the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band and the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra; and Chick Corea, with Gary Burton, Three Quartets featuring Michael Brecker, the Elektric Band, and Flora Purim & Airto Moreira, on August 28.

The daughter of the great Nat "King" Cole, NATALIE COLE has eight Grammys, eight gold albums, and three platinum albums to her credit. She began her career in the '70s singing in jazz supper clubs, and developed her own sound combining influences of R&B, jazz, and urban pop. Cole has recorded electronically-created duets with her father, winning critical accolades for her sentimental tribute. The gifted vocalist last appeared at the Bowl with the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 2001.

After a history of playing everything from hard bop to smooth jazz, keyboardist/composer JOE SAMPLE has become a legendary jazzman. With roots in gospel, soul, bebop, blues, Latin, and classical, Sample was a founding member of the ground-breaking fusion ensemble The Jazz Crusaders in the late '50s, and went on to a successful solo career. He has also proven a valuable studio and touring sideman to musical greats including Marvin Gaye, Tina Turner, B. B. King, Anita Baker, and Randy Crawford. Joe Sample last performed at the Bowl in 2001.

One of the largest natural amphitheaters in the world, with a seating capacity of just under 18,000, the HOLLYWOOD BOWL has been the summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic since its official opening in 1922, and, in 1991 gave its name to The Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, a resident ensemble that has filled a special niche in the musical life of Southern California. A hit from its very first season, the Hollywood Bowl has remained popular and accessible to a wide cross-section of Southern California's diverse population. To this day, $1 buys a seat at the top of the Bowl for many of the Los Angeles Philharmonic's concerts. While the Bowl is best known for its sizzling summer nights, during the day California's youngest patrons enjoy "Open House at the Bowl," the Southland's most popular summer arts festival for children, now in its 34th season. Attendance figures over the past several decades have soared: in 1980 the Bowl first topped the half-million mark and last summer, close to one million admissions were recorded. It is no wonder that the Bowl's summer music festivals have become as much a part of a Southern California summer as beaches and barbecues, the Dodgers and Disneyland.
