With the incredible backing of donors like you the LA Phil harnesses the transformative power of live music to build community, foster intellectual and artistic growth, and nurture the creative spirit.
One way we are accomplishing that is through the LA Phil Humanities program. The Humanities program takes the work on our stages as a starting point for a larger cultural conversation. By inviting a diverse range of guest curators, artists, and partner organizations to reflect on the themes of our concert programming, our Humanities efforts seek to contextualize the LA Phil’s work in thought-provoking ways, delve deeply into subjects that matter in contemporary society, and provide new points of entry into our art form. Humanities activities are typically offered in conjunction with season festivals and take many forms, from commissioned installations and panel discussions to print publications and live podcast recordings. This year’s programming includes an immersive installation of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland reimagined by Frank Gehry, a multimedia panel about the real San Fernando Valley from the people who grew up there, a celebration of Los Angeles’ LGBTQ+ community circa 1990, and much more.
Our donor-backed Humanities program will introduce you to ideas that inform, inspire, and invite you to learn more about the many meanings of our art form in the world today.
